The trek goes through a wildlife section; hence, you might need a permit for the same as well.
A few trekkers choose to go beyond the Hampta Pass Trek, which is Chandratal Lake, and for the same, they might have to obtain an ILP (inner line permit).
Bring your valid government ID cards, like the Aadhaar card, driving license, and PAN card, to obtain the permit.

Complete Hampta Pass Trek Itinerary
Day 1: Manali to Jobra to Chhika
Drive distance: 16 km, around 1 hour till Jobra
Altitude: 10,100 ft
Trek distance: 3 km, around 2 hours till Chhika
Meals included: breakfast, lunch, evening snacks, and dinner.
Overnight stay: Chhika Campsite
How does your day 1 look?
Today’s trek marks a walk through the forest. The trekking journey starts with the 1-hour drive from Manali to Jobra in a vehicle arranged by Thin Air Expedition.
Manali is a good place to get acclimatized for the forthcoming journey. Around 40 hairpin bends and a beautiful view of Kullu Valley during the drive, you will reach Jobra, the base of your trek. From here you will start trekking towards Hampta Pass. Today, you will end your journey in Chhika.
Rani Nallah flows all along the trek through sundry forests of green maple, birches, and pine. No steep path, only an easy trek starting from the project junction of Allain Guhugal. Cross the road and follow a short path to reach the slope.
Indulge in the beauty of the environs and head towards the green meadow where small rocks are scattered all across the land.
Keep walking for another 20 minutes, and you will reach Rani Nallah flowing right in the middle of the meadow.
There are two ways to reach Chhika: walking through meadows or climbing up the hill on the left side. Choose the easier route, which is first climbing the hill and then descending.
From here you will see your campsites. The Rani River still flows through the middle of the meadow, making the entire setup clickworthy. If lucky, you will spot a herd of horses grazing in the meadows.
Day 2: Chhika to Balu Ka Ghera
Trek distance: 6 to 7 km, around 5 to 6 hours
Altitude covered: 11,800 ft
Meals included: breakfast, lunch, evening snacks, and dinner.
Overnight stay: Balu ka Ghera Campsite
How does your day 2 look?
On day 2, you trek towards Balu Ka Ghera—your next campsite. Take the right to reach the area where boulders and rough terrain are awaiting for you. Today also the trek is easy and will be completed without any difficulty.
The right bank of the river has beautiful dwarf rhododendro trees covering up the lower region, and a group of silver birches covers up the upper region.
As soon as you cross the silver birch tree cluster, turn and get mesmerized by the picturesque range of Dhauladhar snow-clad peaks.
As you move ahead, one waterfall with a clear stream lies to the left, seen from a distance. Fill up your bottles. Sip some out of it, take a small rest, and keep going.
Move towards the river flowing to your left. To get on the opposite side of the river, put your feet on the rocks. Wetting your feet and not using rocks to cross the river will give your feet pricks.
Enter the charming sheltered valley called Jwara, which means you have completed half of the day’s trek. On one side there are gigantic snow-covered rocks, and on the other side the valley descends to the river.
Now from here the trail interweaves with the river, leading you to another valley. As you walk, look in front to view snow-clad mountains, multi-colored flowers on the land, and the last of the tree lines.
Trek for another half an hour where the valley ends, indicating the Jwara part is over. Enter the slope area covered with snow and rocks, along with many colors (yellow, pink, purple) of wildflowers.
As you progress, the terrain gets flatter gradually, and you have to cross the path of boulders and rocks. This is the last lap in order to reach Balu ka Ghera, which means “mound of sand.”
Day 3: Balu Ka Ghera to Hampta Pass to Shea Goru
Trek distance: 7 km, around 10 hours
Altitude covered: 14,100 ft
Meals included: breakfast, lunch, evening snacks, and dinner.
Overnight stay: Shea Goru Campsite
How does your day 3 look?
Touch the highest altitude today, which is 1,100 ft. You can split the journey into two halves: a steady ascent on a moderately steep slope to Hampta Pass, hence a sharp descent to Shea Goru. Witness the beauty of the mountains, which we saw from Balu Ghera yesterday, more closely today.
As you trek by the riverside, you get closer to the climb to Hampta Pass. You might get lost in between, as the trail disappears after some time; hence, stay with the group. However, our trek leader will stay with you all the time and guide you through the journey, so there is no fear of separating from the group. An hour’s trek to reach tableland, where you will see the place completely covered with fresh, thick snow. If not, you will definitely see snow patches scattered.
Today, you will see two tablelands. After a 90-minute trek, reach another flat land’s end through a ridge followed by a second ridge. Just a bend and a few more meters to arrive at Hampta Pass. Be careful, as the climb to Hampta Pass is hard. To get the best view of this trek, your fitness and patience levels will be tested. But all this hard work is worth it, as you will relish the beauty of the Himalayas.
The journey doesn’t end here. After a hearty lunch, get ready for the more complex descent to Shea Goru. Your trek leaders will guide you on how to get down the slope; you might have to use rope as the descent is too steep. But the best part is you get to spot spot Spiti during the way down.
After half an hour of rambling, you will arrive at the valley base. From here the trail leads towards Shea Goru. Yet other camps at riverside are waiting for you to enjoy the starry night. Call it a day.
Day 4: Shea Goru to Chatru to Chandratal (optional and if roads are clear)
Trek distance: 7 km, around 5 hours
Drive distance to Chandratal: 50 km, around 2.5 to 3 hours (only if weather conditions allow)
Altitude covered: 14,100 ft
Meals included: breakfast, lunch, evening snacks, and dinner.
Overnight stay: Shea Goru Campsite
How does your day 4 look?
Relish a hearty breakfast and start your foot journey from Shea Goru to Chatru. It is an easy downhill trek for 5 hours maximum. The trail gets slippery here, so be careful.
Chatru has no vegetation as it is located in the barren mountains. From here the trail leads you to mountain ridges and edges, including slippery sections. You are going to enjoy the sliding part here.
In 2 more hours, you will witness another river flowing by the road called Chandra River. A few glaciers will come along the way, which you will have to cross. Chatru is on the other side of the glaciers—your campsite for the night.
Day 5: Chatru to Manali
Drive distance: 65 km, around 5 to 6 hours
Meals included: breakfast
How does your last day look?
Bid adieu to your fellow trekkers and drive back to Manali. Reach Manali after a 5-hour drive. From here you can book your journey ahead.
Risks and Precautions
Sudden elevation can cause you headache, nausea, and dizziness, known as AMS. The mountainous region is known for its unpredictable weather—sudden rain, heavy snowfall, and drops in temperature can block the trails. Be extra careful while crossing the glaciers, rivers, and passes, as the terrain gets slippery. There are no phone signals during the journey, and medical help can be delayed. Carry your important medications all the time; however, our team always carries essential first aid and is well-trained with medical emergencies.
Stay hydrated throughout the hike and avoid smoking and alcohol. Carry essential gear—a list will be shared by us before your journey begins. Carry only what is important. Always travel with the certified guide who can manage medical emergencies and assist you during river crossings and tricky trails. Be easy on your body and avoid rushing to the end point.
